Being/becoming a full-time practising astrologer…
Not always sunshine but comes with a lot of joy and freedom!
8 years ago…I was 40 years old and I decided to study astrology in a structured way even though I grew up in a household where there was always astrology all around!
I don’t want to say some cliché words like ‘Oh, it’s possible to change your life anytime. It’s not late for any of your passions!’ Partly it’s true but it’s not easy, as I mentioned above it’s not always sunshine. Especially if you have a 9-5 job, working in a corporate structure or in any type of work environment, you might be completely going into a different world in which for a while a regular income may not be part of the deal either. This could be a struggle that we may need to face and keep in mind. Instead of earning, whether we go with self-taught or school way, we need to spend to invest in our education somehow. Nowadays, there are many online libraries we have access to in which we are able to find a lot of sources for free or affordable courses we may learn about the fundamentals but learning is life-time once you are in and we somehow need to keep ourselves updated. In addition to this, there is not a 100% social life promise which is fine for me but may not be fine for everyone…Despite of the communities or societies you may get involved with, it’s sometimes lonely…You and the computer, you and your notes and the charts in front of you, you and your books! However, I have to say that during courses, workshops or in-person meetings, conferences it’s completely a blast with all the mental exchange going on. And I always feel fresh in mind since there is nearly no repetitiveness in astrology except the cycles but no one is the same person or the world is not the same world when going through them in different times. You always get exposed to some new information, new perspectives. Seeing different lives through different charts is absolutely fascinating. The sky is not static; changes every day bringing its dynamics into our lives.
Having said all, I believe that one of the most important things is to decide about in which part of astrology we would like to actively play a role. Client work, teaching, talks, writing, research? It could be some or it could be all but I think that it’s crucial to realise for whom we are doing astrology as well. Are we doing it for the astrological community in case that we are more into writing and teaching or would we like to have a wider audience which means less jargon, more daily life language? I think that at the beginning whatever we do, we do it for ourselves and then we think about how to spread knowledge and accumulated experience as sharing is caring. On this note, I have to say that I am a very big advocate for collaborations. It’s really important to talk to other fellow astrologers, run sessions, workshops together, and if you are active on social media, work together with them because we only grow through raising each other up! As the Astrologers’ Co-op says ‘We are all under the same sky!” Whoever we are, from what background we come from, we add more flavour, bring more colour to the table. All that matters is that we are in this moment on the same boat dedicated to speaking the one and only beautiful language: astrology. So, all we have to do is to support each other.
I personally received and gave a lot of support throughout the years and continue to do so adding more and more collaborations every day as much as the time lets. In this regard, If I may give shout out to some people here, I think that I will be much happier and feel that I make justice to them: My dear partner in crime on YouTube is Alison (Boulton), someone that I admire for her work in general but specifically on the decan walk is Christa (Hamilton) (I manage to get a part in her decan projects every year until she says ‘Enough, Teri!) and Jasmina (Brozovic) whom I like calling ‘The Queen of Collaborations.’ And there is another friend of mine whose knowledge is immense despite of her young age, she is literally a walking encyclopaedia especially when it comes to traditional astrology and that is Şira (Nur Uysal). I can literally just bow in front of Astrologers’ Co-op for the astrological values they represent, their work on the 36 decans and now with the new projects loading in the horizon. I should thank them for inspiring me for this humble piece you are reading. If you know about Tarot, this part I just mentioned so far in this paragraph is more like the scene on the 10 of Pentacles. But, rainbow may not be always waiting for us or doesn’t last forever! To be honest, there are always big egos in every sector, in every group so to be able to keep our heads up and stay confident we have to ‘Just ignore and keep scrolling down!’ 😊))
Well, maybe not an easy path, comes with its challenges but worth the ride as it brings a lot of freedom, a lot of joy while giving us the opportunity to stay connected to the sky…
I would like to finish this article with a quote which has become my motto in the last few years:
“...Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all...” Ithaka - C.P.Cavafy

This hit me in a strange way because I used to be a full time professional tarot reader years ago, and now at 60 I feel myself slowly drifting back toward all the parts of tarot I actually love, the writing, creating, weird little ideas, making things, not just reading for survival all the time.
I think getting older changes the shape of the work somehow. Or maybe changes the shape of us around the work.
There’s a line from the film *Nyad* that got stuck in my head after watching it. She finally completes that swim at 64 and keeps saying, “You’re never too old to chase your dreams.” Felt like something cracked open in me a bit hearing that honestly.
Plus pension age for women in the UK is 67 now so technicaly I’ve still got a good 7 years left to become some strange tarot swamp creature lurking around Substack 😂
Hope that made some kind of sense 😂

Thanks for the shout-out Teri. I love our YouTube channel.
